Common Surgeries Performed:Reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and elbow, including the management of arthritis of the shoulder and elbow, shoulder and elbow dislocations, rotator cuff tears, and failed shoulder and elbow surgery. Common procedures include total shoulder replacement, Bankart repair, rotator cuff repair, revision surgery for failed reconstructions, reversed (reverse Delta) prosthesis, total elbow replacement arthroplasty.
Philosophy of care/General Information:Patients with shoulder and elbow problems deserve experienced, specialized and personally individualized care by a multidisciplinary team.

Research Interests:Identifying better approaches to restoring comfort and function to shoulder and elbow joints damaged by arthritis, injuries and previous surgeries. Emphasis on finding ways to stimulate the regeneration of the body's own tissues.

An interview with Rick Matsen, M.D. Dr Matsen has dedicated his entire professional life to developing excellence in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Washington. Starting with his residency here in 1971 he developed an interest in shoulder and elbow reconstruction. A fellowship with the father of modern shoulder surgery, Dr Charles S. Neer II confirmed his lifetime commitment to improving the art of care of patients with simple and complex problems involving the shoulder and elbow. Read More

The University of Washington Medical Center was again ranked highly for orthopaedic surgery by US News and World Report, this year being listed as 15th in the nation.


Dr. Michael Lee specializes in degenerative conditions of the spine and has a particular interest in newer surgical techniques including minimally invasive approaches and disc-replacement surgeries.


Dr. Cavanagh has been invited to deliver the keynote talk at the International Osteoporosis meeting


Dr. Beingessner, Assistant Professor, received 2008 spring quarter's HMC CARES Service Excellence Award.


Dr Henley has recently been appointed to the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)
