About Dr. Chansky

Dr. Chansky is Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. He is a specialist in bone and soft tissue tumors, and practices at UW Medical Center, Northwest Medical Center and at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System.

He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University and then his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he also did his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery. He came to Seattle for a fellowship in orthopaedic oncology at UW Medical Center in 1992. He is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery.

Total Knee Arthroplasty: Early Innovations and Modern Approaches

Total knee replacement surgery (TKA) has revolutionized care of osteoarthritis over the past 40 years. Given its success, there has been a rapid increase in the number of TKAs performed yearly, which is projected to continue to increase in the coming years. In this Grand Rounds, UW Medicine physicians Howard Chansky, Justin Klimisch, and Nicholas Wegner review the history of total knee arthroplasty, focusing on the historical development beginning in the 1860s and then focus on the explosion of new designs developed during the 1970s. Modern approaches used in primary and revision total knee arthroplasty are then reviewed. Case studies are highlighted that demonstrate some of the challenges of primary and revision TKA.

Summit in Seattle 2012: Challenges in Hip and Pelvic Fractures

Pelvic fractures are complex entities for treating surgeons. Some of the factors which add to the challenges are highly complex fracture patterns and patients with considerable obesity. Professor Dr. Norbert Haas, Chairman of the Charite University Hospital in Berlin, Germany and his team introduce a newly developed approach through the abdominal wall which will allow for a more direct fracture reduction and stabilization (fracture repair) highly comminuted (shattered). The program concludes with Dr. Chansky discussing options of prosthetic replacement for acetabular fractures in elderly patients.

Periprosthetic fractures occur around total joint replacements and are difficult to treat. Occurring most often in older patients with multiple medical conditions, they require surgical expertise in both reconstruction and trauma.

Moderated by Brian Daines, MD, this lecture reviews treatment options for periprosthetic fractures and a discussion of case of studies with UW Medicine physicians David Barei, MD and Howard Chansky, MD. Learn how these orthopedic surgeons at UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center are working together to offer patients treatment options for these challenging injuries.
