Allan F. Tencer, PhD
Dr. Allan Tencer is a graduate of McGill University in Mechanical
Engineering in Montreal, Quebec. Following his training in mechanical
engineering, he completed his Masters and PhD in Mechanical
Engineering at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec in 1981.
He started his career as an Assistant Professor in Biomedical and
Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington and
jointly in Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Texas Health Science
Center; Dallas, Texas in 1981. He became an Associate Professor at
University of Washington in Orthopaedics, Bioengineering and Mechanical
Engineering and established and became the Director of the Biomechanics
Laboratory at Harborview Medical Center in 1988. He is currently a
Professor at University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center, is
on the Harborview Injury Prevention Research Center Steering Committee
and is Head of the Biomechanics Section of the center.
Dr. Tencer has 5 patents:
US Patent #4,662,364: A method for the functional bracing of
metacarpal fractures of the hand. Viegas SF, Tencer AF, Woodard PL,

US Patents #5,074,864: Clamp assembly for use in a spinal system,
#5,112,332 and #5,116,334: Method of performing spinal surgery,
#5,147,359: Spinal hook body.Cozad TE, Lozier AJ, Tencer AF.
He currently focuses his studies on the Prevention of
Musculoskeletal Injury. He is the Principal Investigator of a study on
injuries to the chest and pelvis in side impact vehicle crashes. He has
published numerous articles related to fracture fixation, foot and
ankle, upper extremity, and spine biomechanics.
