UW Sports Medicine Physical Therapy Clinic

The UW Sports Medicine Physical Therapy Clinic can help you recover from sports related injuries whether you are a world-class athlete or only slightly active or a neighborhood walker. The UW Sports Medicine Physical Therapy Clinic is located in the UW Sports Medicine Clinic, at the Bank of America (Hec Edmunson) Pavilion (3850 Montlake Boulevard NE, just north of Husky Stadium) in Seattle.

Why see a physical therapist?

A physical therapist evaluates and guides a patient’s recovery from pain, an injury, or surgery by developing a treatment program. A treatment program can include joint/soft tissue mobilization, modalities, and exercise prescription. A physical therapist will help to maximize the patient's level of physical function by working with the patient to design a treatment program designed to his or her specific needs.

Services

We offer a full range of sports/fitness testing and treatment for orthopedic injuries, including:

  • Treatment for injury to ankle/foot, knee, hip, shoulder, back/neck, elbow/hand

  • Evaluation of pain or discomfort during exercise or movement

  • Fitness evaluations
    • Patients' general flexibility, strength, body composition, posture and aerobic conditioning are tested. Patients receive suggestions for exercises specific to their individual assessment.

  • Bike fit assessments
    • Cyclists bring in their bicycle and shoes for this assessment. Participants will be evaluated for posture, strength, and flexibility. This assessment will be combined with the cycling technique demonstrated on their bicycle. Participants may receive suggestions for exercises, positions, cycling techniques, bicycle modifications to enable enjoyable cycling experiences.

  • Casting for custom orthotics
    • Biomechanical evaluation of gait and lower body, plaster molds taken of patients' feet and custom orthotics ordered.

  • Golf swing assessment

  • Neuromuscular retraining programs for reduction in ACL injuries

Providers

The clinic is staffed by 5 physical therapists with collective of 70 years of experience.

    Susanne F.T. Michaud, DPT, LMP Susanne is the latest member to join the Sports Medicine team. She completed her DPT in Physical Therapy at the University of Washington. She is also a Licensed Massage Practioner as well as a Certified Yoga Instructor. She enjoys teaching students in the department of Rehabilitation Medicine as well as working marathon races.

    Joy Beatty, MSPT graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1997 with a Masters in Physical Therapy. Since that time she has been working at the University of Washington Sports Medicine clinic. She has been featured on UW television regarding back rehabilitation and is a certified Pilates instructor. She also has extensive training in the work of Shirley Sahrmann and her specialty lies in movement analysis and education. Joy enjoys working with a diverse population at the University. In her free time she can be found rockclimbing, mountain biking, and trying, at least once, all the things her patients do.

    Sarah Guillen, MPT graduated from the University of Washington in 2002 with a master’s degree in Physical Therapy. She has been with the University of Washington since 2004. Sarah really enjoys working with the active and motivated population at the Sports Medicine Clinic helping them to achieve their most optimal functional level. She is very interested not only with orthopaedic/sports related injuries, but also women’s health, pelvis/core weakness that can cause dysfunction through the entire lower chain; movement analysis and biomechanics, especially in regards to runners and yoga enthusiasts, as well as the rest of the active population of Seattle. In her free time, Sarah can be found cycling, running, practicing yoga or snowboarding.

    Michele Honeycutt, PT graduated from the University of Washington Physical Therapy Program in 1991 and has been at the University of Washington Sports Medicine Clinic ever since, treating sports related and orthopedic injuries. Michele enjoys working with teenagers as well as the adult population. Michele enjoys horseback riding, gardening and traveling with her family in her free time.

    Aaron Kingsland, DPT, SCS, CSCS graduated from Pacific University School of Physical Therapy in Forest Grove, Oregon with a doctorate degree in 2002. He then returned to his home state of Nevada before moving to White Salmon, WA to complete a one year Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Residency Program in 2005. Aaron is an American Physical Therapy Association Sports Certified Specialist, and also a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He has an interest in rehabilitation of a variety of orthopedic/sports injuries with a special interest in injuries of the shoulder and throwing athletes, as well as golf assessment and rehabilitation. Aaron enjoys snowboarding, hiking/backpacking, mountain biking, softball/baseball and playing golf.

Insurance Coverage

University of Washington Physicians services are covered by most insurance plans. If you are covered by a managed care plan you may need to get referral from your primary care physician for your visit to be covered. If you need a primary care physician, we can help you find one at University of Washington Medical Center-Roosevelt or at another University of Washington Physicians clinic near you.
