News about Dr. Hanel:
The Edwin G. Bovill Award was presented to Dr. Douglas Hanel
and colleagues from the University of Toronto and the University of
Minnesota. This award acknowledges the best paper of the year given at
the Orthopedic trauma association annual meeting. The investigation was
titled "A Randomized Controlled Trial of Indirect Reduction and
Percutaneus Fixation versus Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for
Displaced Distal Radius Fractures." Co-investigators included Hans
Kreder, M.D. (an alumnus of the Harborview trauma program) and Julie
Agel, currently a research coordinator in the department. The award was
presented during the Annual meeting of the AAOS in New Orleans.

| | Philosophy of care/General Information: | | In
1977, Dr. Hanel received his medical degree from St. Louis University
School of Medicine. He then completed an Orthopaedic Residency from St.
Louis University Health Center. Dr. Hanel completed a Fellowship in
Hand and Microsurgery at the University of Louisville in 1984. In 1985
he served on the Hand Surgery Service at the Medical University of
South Carolina. From 1985 to 1988, Dr. Hanel was Assistant Professor at
the Department of Orthopaedics at St. Louis University. From 1988 to
1992 he was assistant professor and co-director at the Hand Surgery
Fellowship Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
In 1992, Dr. Hanel joined our Hand Surgery Service at the University
of Washington as an Associate Professor. His areas of expertise include
Hand Trauma where he focuses his interest at Harborview Medical Center,
the only Level I Trauma Center in Western Washington. He is also in
charge of the Pediatric Hand Surgery Program at Children's Hospital
Medical Center, which the affiliated hospital at the University of
Washington providing comprehensive subspecialty care for all pediatric
medical problems. Dr. Hanel's research interests include outcome
studies related to Hand Surgery and Hand Trauma as well as
biomechanical studies related to methods for treating hand injuries. In
order to improve the care for patients with upper extremity trauma, Dr.
Hanel has worked to develop new techniques for the emergency treatment
of patients with injuries ranging from amputations to need for soft
tissue coverage.

An Interview with Gregory A. Schmale, M.D.

Greg grew up in Rochester, New York, learning to love the outdoors and a wide variety of sporting activities. A yearning for higher education led him to medical school at the University of Washington and his current career path ultimately into pediatric orthopaedics.

The University of Washington Medical Center was again ranked highly for
orthopaedic surgery by US News and World Report, this year being listed as 15th
in the nation.
Dr. Beingessner, Assistant Professor, received 2008 spring quarter's HMC CARES Service Excellence Award.
Dr Henley has recently been appointed to the Board of Directors of the
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)
Dr. Leopold lectured recently in San Francisco at the annual meeting of the
Hippocrates Winslow Babbage Foundation.
Dr. Maheshwari, orthopaedic resident, has been nominated by the Program Director and Chair of Orthopaedics to attend the 2008 AOA-OREF-Zimmer Resident Leadership Forum.
