Christopher H. Allan, MD
Dr. Chris Allan is a graduate of Northwestern University Medical
School. Following his orthopedic training at the University of
Chicago School of Medicine, he completed a Hand and Microvascular
Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.
He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of
Orthiopedics and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of
Surgery at the University of Washington. He is a member of the
Research Committee and the Resident Recruitment Committee in the
Department of Orthopedics. In 2004 Dr. Allan was awarded an AAOS/OREF
Clinician Scientist Traveling Fellowship to pursue further work in stem
cell biology and tissue engineering. Dr. Allan has made presentations
at over twenty national meetings and is Principal Investigator in 2
active research projects. He has over fifteen peer-reviewed articles
and six book chapters published or accepted.

Dr. David Barei is a graduate of University of Ottawa. Following
his training in Orthopedic Surgery at The Ottawa Hospital in Ottawa,
Canada, he completed a Trauma Fellowship at Harborview Medical Center.
He is currently an Assistant Professor at University of Washington,
with a predominant interest in periarticular fractures and repair of
nonunions. Dr. Barei is part of the Residency and Trauma ACE
Selection Committees at University of Washington. He has presented in
numerous medical meetings, and has published several articles and book
chapters.

Dr. Daphne Beingessner is a graduate of University of Waterloo in
Ontario, Canada and the University of Western Ontario in London,
Ontario, Canada. Following her training in orthopedic surgery at
University of Western Ontario, she completed a Hand and Upper Limb
Fellowship at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in London, Ontario. She also
completed a Masters of Science degree in Medical Biophysics at the
University of Western Ontario and a Trauma Fellowship at Harborview
Medical Center in Seattle, WA.
She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of
Canada and is currently an Acting Assistant Professor at University of

Dr. Carlo Bellabarba is a graduate of McGill University in
Montreal, Quebec. Following his training in Orthopedic Surgery at
Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois he

Spine Fellowship at Northwestern University.
He is currently an Assistant Professor at University of Washington
in the Orthopedics and Neurosurgery departments. He is the Director
of the Spine ACE Program at Harborview Medical Center and is on the HMC

Admissions Committee at University of Washington. He is on the

Dr. Stephen Benirschke is a graduate of the Case Western Reserve
University. He completed a fellowship in at Rätisches Kantons-und
Regional Hospital in Switzerland with Prof. Tom Ruedi.
He started as an Acting Instructor at the University of Washington
in 1985 and has been a Professor at the University of Washington since
2000. He is a member of the Resident Selection Committee and the
Musculoskeletal Core Course. With a predominant interest in foot and
ankle injuries, Dr. Benirschke has published over 45 peer-reviewed
articles, 3 book chapters and has presented at numerous medical
meetings. He was also the primary investigator on an AO ASIF Research
Grant.

Dr. Rick Bransford is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of
Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. Following his orthopedic training

Dr. Gross holds a B.S. from Trinity University in Texas and an M.S.
from The Pennsylvania State University. Following a 3 year period in
industry, he completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at State
University of New York at Stony Brook in 1993. He subsequently
completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the McCaig Centre for Joint
Injury and Arthritis at University of Calgary in 1995.
His first faculty appointment was as an Assistant Professor in the
Department of Orthopedics at the University of Cincinnati. He is
currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedic
Surgery at University of Washington, Adjunct Associate Professor in the
Department of Bioengineering at University of Washington, and Associate
Member in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Program at University of
Washington. He also serves as the Director of the Orthopedic Science
Laboratories in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at University of
Washington.
Dr. Gross is the holder of the Sigvard T. Hansen, Jr. Endowed Chair
in Orthopedic Traumatology. He has won several young investigator
awards and, most recently, the Journal of Biomechanics Award from
TheAmerican Society of Biomechanics. He is currently the
President-Elect of the American Society of Biomechanics and a regular
member of the SBSR review panel at the National Institutes of Health.
He is Principal Investigator in several ongoing research project and
has published numerous articles in the field of bone biology and
mechanotransduction.

Dr. Douglas Hanel is a graduate of The University of Washington and
The Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Following his training
in Orthopedic Surgery at Saint Louis University he completed
fellowships in hand surgery with Harold E. Kleinert and microvascular
surgery with Robert D. Acland at the University of Louisville. Most
recently he has participated in the “Teaching Scholars” fellowship at
the University of Washington.
He was as an Assistant Professor at the St Louis University School
of Medicine from 1985 to 1988, an Associate Professor and Director of
the Hand Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1988 to
1992. Presently he is a Professor at the University of Washington
where he is the director of the Orthopedic Residency Program.
With a predominant interest in surgery of the hand and the
reconstruction of devastating limb injuries, Dr. Hanel has published
over fifty peer-reviewed articles, 13 book chapters and is presently
the co-editor for the second edition of the textbook Harborview
Orthopedic Trauma Protocols. He is the principle investigator and co
investigator on two Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation
Grants dealing with the outcomes of distal radius fractures.

Dr. Sohail Mirza is a graduate of the University of Colorado.
Following his training in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of
Washington he a completed fellowship in spinal surgery at Harvard
University.
He began as an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington
in 1995 and has been an Associate Professor at the University of
Washington since 2001. Presently he is the Director of Spine Trauma
Research at the University of Washington.
With a predominant interest in spine surgery and spine tumors, Dr.
Mirza has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles, eight book chapters
and has presented at numerous medical meetings. He is the Principal
Investigator of a National Institute of Health research grant to study
the safety of spine surgery and has participated as a PI or co-PI on
many research studies.
He was honored as one of five American Orthopedic Association ABC
Traveling Fellows in 2003 and one of five AOA North American Traveling
Fellows in 1997.

Dr. Sean Nork is a graduate of the University of California-San
Diego medical school. Following his training in Orthopedic Surgery at
UC-San Francisco he a completed a fellowship in traumatology at
Harborview Medical Center.
He has been an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington
since 1998 and was promoted to Associate Professor at the University of
Washington in 2004. Presently he is the Director of Resident Education
at Harborview Medical Center. Dr. Nork traveled to Bern Switzerland
for two months as an AO Allgöwer Fellow in 2004 and was an AOA Fellow
to Japan in 2004 as well.
With a predominant interest in periarticular fractures, polytrauma,
and nonunions, Dr. Nork has published over twenty peer-reviewed
articles and has presented at numerous medical meetings.

Dr. Chip Routt is a graduate of The University of Texas School of
Medicine. Following his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Vanderbilt
University he completed a trauma fellowship at Harborview Medical
Center in 1989. He is now the Director of the Orthopedic Trauma ACE
program. Dr. Routt is a Professor at Harborview Medical Center and the
University of Washington.
He won the Jack McDaniels’ Trauma Award as well as the Howard Rosen
AO/ASIF Teaching award, among others. With a predominant interest in
pelvic and acetabular traumatic injuries, Dr. Routt has published over
fifty peer-reviewed articles and 10 book chapters. He was the principle
investigator in several pelvic biomechanical studies.

Dr. Bruce Sangeorzan is a graduate of Wayne State University in
Detroit, MI. Following his orthopedic training at Wayne State
University in Detroit, MI, he completed a Trauma Fellowship followed by
a Foot and Ankle Fellowship at University of Washington.
He started as an Acting Assistant Professor at University of
Washington. He is currently a Professor at University of Washington
and Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Harborview Medical Center. He was
awarded a Suzuki Japanese/American Traveling Fellowship in Kashiwagi,
Japan in 1994 and an Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation
Clinical Research Award in 2001. He is a course faculty member for the
AAOS Instructional Course, Comprehensive Foot Course, and Summer
Institute Course.
Dr. Sangeorzan is on the Membership Committee for the AAOS,
Secretarial Appointee for the VA Scientific Merit Review Board for
Rehabilitation Research and Development Service, Chair for the VA
Prosthetic Clinical Management Progam. He is also on the Trauma

Dr. Douglas Smith is a graduate of University of Chicago-Pritzker
School of Medicine. Following his orthopedic training at Loyola

Dr. Lisa Taitsman is a graduate of Brown University where she completed
her undergraduate and medical studies. She earned her masters in public

Dr. Allan Tencer is a graduate of McGill University in Mechanical
Engineering in Montreal, Quebec. Following his training in mechanical
engineering, he completed his Masters and PhD in Mechanical
Engineering at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec in 1981.
He started his career as an Assistant Professor in Biomedical and
Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington and
jointly in Orthopedic Surgery at University of Texas Health Science
Center; Dallas, Texas in 1981. He became an Associate Professor at
University of Washington in Orthopedics, Bioengineering and Mechanical
Engineering and established and became the Director of the Biomechanics
Laboratory at Harborview Medical Center in 1988. He is currently a
Professor at University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center, is
on the Harborview Injury Prevention Research Center Steering Committee
and is Head of the Biomechanics Section of the center.
