An Interview with Gregory A. Schmale, M.D.

Gregory A. Schmale, M.D.Greg grew up in Rochester, New York, learning to love the outdoors and a wide variety of sporting activities.  College took him to Cornell University and finally to the University of Colorado where he majored in applied physics with a minor in art.  After a stint as a field geologist in Southern Illinois, Greg entered the University of Washington's College of Education where he received a Master's degree in Science Education. After six years of teaching high school science and math at Seattle's Lakeside School, a yearning for higher education led him to medical school at the University of Washington and his current career path ultimately into pediatric orthopedics here at the University of Washiington.

What do you most enjoy about your work?
I enjoy helping young people who have had an injury heal quickly and effectively, and I love helping those with deformities have those deformities corrected - improving their quality of life.  And, I really enjoy seeing happy faces as patients heal and regain control over their lives.

What is your treatment philosophy?
Effective communication with and education of patients and their families are essential to providing the best care.  The child and young adult are best treated by a cooperative approach that includes the physician, patient, and parents.

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I am an active cyclist, runner, and nature walker.  I enjoy skiing on snow and water, fly-fishing, hiking and camping.  I am an avid reader.  I am a real fan of youth sports - as I have three family athletes to watch on a routine basis.

What is the focus of your teaching efforts?
I teach both medical students and residents.  In the 2nd year of medical school, students routinely take an introductory course in musculoskeletal medicine.  I am the chair of that course, directing its organization and leading a small group.  I also teach third and fourth year medical students in the pediatric orthopedic clinical elective at Children's Hospital, serving as Director of the clerkship.  I supervise 3rd and 5th year residents in orthopedics during their pediatric orthopedic rotation at Children's, serving as the residency coordinator for the Children's site.

What do your most recent research efforts focus on?
Medical student learning in musculoskeletal medicine
Septic arthritis of the hip in children and young adults
Group A Streptococcal toxic shock in patients with bone and joint infections
Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in the skeletally immature
Treatment alternatives for fibula fractures in the skeletally immature

What is the focus of your clinical efforts?
Pediatric and adolescent sports medicine and general pediatric orthopedics
