Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine

An interview with Peter Hall, PA-C

I grew up in the north end of Seattle. Early in my health care career, I worked as an Emergency Medical Technician in Seattle. I moved on to a clinical setting in Orthopaedics prior to my PA training. As I graduated from University of Washington School of Medicine (MEDEX Northwest) in 2007, it didn’t take long to find a home with the UWMC Orthopaedic team in 2008.

What do you most enjoy about your work

I enjoy connecting with people. It is really rewarding to open up possibilities for people that have limitations due to pain or other disability. I have helped provide care for folks that have come in for care, unable to walk normally let alone play sports or be generally active. Through education and treatment, many of the people we see can return to outdoor activities and a more active lifestyle. The expression that one has from overcoming substantial disability is something very special.

What is your treatment philosophy?

I intend to provide care with compassion, education, choices, and include the patient in the decision making process. If the patient understands his or her condition and options for treatment, better decisions can be made about how to best proceed with regard to their own lifestyle and health philosophies.

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I am active in many year around outdoor activities with family and friends.

What is the focus of your teaching efforts?

I primarily work with medical students, physician assistant students and residents in both clinical and surgical settings. I find this very enjoyable. It is rewarding to contribute to building the foundation it takes to become a provider.

What do your most recent research efforts focus on?

I'm not currently participating in research.

What is the focus of your clinical efforts?
One of the most important things I do is to educate the patient. The best care is provided by empowering them to take part in their recovery. I cannot overstate this concept.

Principal Clinical Interests (common diagnoses treated, common surgeries done) :
A fair amount of general orthopaedics is seen but most patients will come in with hip or knee pain. This is typically associated with arthritis, or meniscal or ligamentous injury.

If surgery is necessary, I assist Paul Manner, M.D., in the following:
  • Minimally invasive total hip replacement
  • Total hip replacement
  • Minimally-invasive partial knee replacement (unicompartmental)
  • Knee osteotomy
  • Total knee replacement
  • Hemiresurfacing arthroplasty of the hip ("partial hip replacement")
  • Hemiarthroplasty for hip fracture
  • Open reduction internal fixation ("repair") of hip fractures
  • Knee arthroscopy
