Hip and Knee Arthritis Service

The Hip and Knee Arthritis Service, a specialty service of UW Medical Center's Bone and Joint Surgery Center, specializes in the evaluation and management of hip and knee conditions. One of our specialties is the surgical treatment of these joints when they are damaged by arthritis. We perform primary and revision total joint replacements as well as corrective osteotomies. In selected patients with arthritis and traumatic cartilage defects, we also offer joint surface transplantation (osteochondral allografts).

Nationally Recognized Program
The Hip and Knee Arthritis Service is a component of UW Medical Center's Bone and Joint Surgery Center, which is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the top orthopedic program in the western half of the United States.

Our physicians and research programs lead the way in innovative care for hip and knee problems. We are actively developing new, more effective methods of evaluating and treating our patients.

Our team of specialty-trained physicians, therapists, physicians' assistants, and nurses use a multidisciplinary approach in caring for patients, with easy access to other world-class experts at UWMC who can assist with diagnosis and treatment plans.

Our Approach
Our goal is maximum recovery of hip and knee joint function. The physical therapists in the Exercise Training Center, also part of the Bone and Joint Surgery Center, offer non-surgical care and post-surgical rehabilitation programs.

Management options can range from simple exercises to major reconstruction surgery, which can be performed right here at UW Medical Center.

When a patient's condition involves multiple joints or systemic arthritis, we have ready access to experts in other areas of reconstruction orthopedics, in rheumatology, and in rehabilitation medicine.

Facilities
The University of Washington offers two clinics that provide information and care for individuals with hip and knee arthritis.
