The Hand Surgery Fellows complete four three-month rotations during the year. These rotations are divided into the Harborview Medical Center and Children's Hospital Medical Center rotation, the University of Washington Medical Center rotation, and the Plastic Surgery/Orthopedic rotation.
Harborview Medical Center/Children's Hospital The Fellow on this rotation covers the Hand Surgery Clinic at Harborview Medical Center along with the Hand Surgery faculty. There is one day a week at the Hand Clinic at Children's Hospital Medical Center. The Fellow has approximately 1-1/2 days of operating experience at Harborview Medical Center each week and one half-day at Children's Hospital Medical Center each week. The focus of this rotation is to gain an in-depth experience with upper extremity trauma as well as the problems related with congenital hand surgery.University of Washington Medical Center rotation The Fellow on this rotation attends the Hand Surgery clinics at the University of Washington Medical Center. The operative experience focuses on reconstructive hand surgery and arthroscopy of the upper extremity. The Fellow on this rotation can access the Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Service to gain additional experience with the problems related to the shoulder and elbow.Plastic surgery/orthopedic hand surgery rotation The Fellow on this rotation spends time with Dr. Vedder, who is a faculty member in the Division of Plastic Surgery as well with Dr. Christopher Allan, who is a faculty member in the Department of Orthopedics. The purpose of this rotation is to provide an integrated Hand Surgery Service between Plastic Surgeon and Orthopedics so that the Fellows gain additional insights and perspectives from a variety of faculty.
