New Grant  to study mechanisms of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis Dr. David Eyre and Burgess lab research team have been awarded a five year NIH grant entitled "Collagen Cross-linking in Skeletal Aging and Disease". 



Dr. Sangeorzan, Professor and Vice Chair of Orthopedics UW School of Medicine, has received the 2005 clinical research award from the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Pacific Northwest Magazine covers UW physicians, including UW Orthopedics sports medicine specialist Dr. John O'Kane, as they work with elite athletes to return to athletics.



Drs. Doug Hanel and Thomas Trumble, have published their randomized clinical trial in the British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS).




Dr. Doug Smith was featured on a KOMO TV news piece entitled "I'm Lucky to Be Able to Help", in which he lends his skills and provides hope to those wounded in war.



Dr. John O'Kane, associate professor of UW Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, was feature in the Health Beat Article "Teens, Steroids and Muscles"



Dr Chapman was featured on "Andrew Schorr's Patient Power" a 1 hour live, call in talk show every Sunday on KVI 570.  Full audio of the Dr Chapman's interview is available for listening online.



John Sidles, Professor of Orthopedics, is the  Principal Investigator for the "Advancement of Magnetic Resonance Force  Microscopy to Single Nuclear Spin Detection" project that will be  conducted in the Department's MRFM Program (in collaboration with the  Mechanical Engineering Department.)



Dr. Lisa Taitsman and Dr. Sean Nork were featured in a Seattle Weekly article, "Down From the Mountain", describing their great work on a severely injured climber.



Dr Green has been selected as one of the 2005 American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine Traveling Fellows. The tour is scheduled for May 8 - June 4, 2005, and will visit Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Brazil.



2004 Best Hospitals The Orthopedic Services at UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center continue to be listed among the best of the best according to U.S. News & World Report's 2004 annual guide to "America's Best Hospitals".

Dr Leopold was featured in the KIRO TV story "New Choice For Knee Replacement Surgery" for his work with a minimally invasive procedure called quadricep sparing knee replacement.





The Board of Regents of the University of Washington approved the appointment of Dr. Jens R. Chapman as the first holder of the Hansjoerg Wyss Endowed Chair, effective January 1, 2004. Dr. Chapman's extensive background and outstanding achievements make him an excellent choice for the Wyss Chair.



John M. Clark, Jr., M.D., Ph.D. is featured in an Autumn 2002 Breakthrough article, "Minimal approach has major effects", describing a patient experience with minimally invasive hip replacement surgery.
