* March 3, 2003: Sohail Mirza (at left) has been
awarded the 2003 American British Canadian Traveling Fellowship by the
American Orthopaedic Association. He will visit leading orthopaedic
centers in Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand. Here he is joined
by D. K. Clawson, founding chair of our department and an ABC traveling
fellow in 1967, Tom Trumble (ABC traveling fellow in 1993), and Rick
Matsen (ABC traveling fellow in 1983).
* September 30, 2002: Dr. Mirza has received a major
grant from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and
Skin Diseases on the Safety of Lumbar Fusion Surgery for Chronic Back

An interview with Rick Matsen, M.D.

Dr Matsen has dedicated his entire professional life to developing excellence in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Washington. Starting with his residency here in 1971 he developed an interest in shoulder and elbow reconstruction. A fellowship with the father of modern shoulder surgery, Dr Charles S. Neer II confirmed his lifetime commitment to improving the art of care of patients with simple and complex problems involving the shoulder and elbow.

Dr. Rick Matsen's review of clinical care options for patients with rotator-cuff failure was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Rotator-cuff tears are the most common cause of shoulder pain and disability in the U.S.
